Kemp Delph clean-up
A community effort in 2009 saw an Oswaldtwistle beauty spot cleaned up litter that had tarnished the area over the last two years. Local residents descended on Kemp Delph, off Stanhill Lane, for the event, organised by Stanhill Village Residents Association.
Local Councillor Doug Hayes also attended to lend a hand along with Knuzden PCSO Andy Connell, both of whom got stuck in with residents to help remove rubbish. At least two dozen trainers, a large amount of polystyrene and even a beer keg were removed from the area which is a home for fish, frogs and wild birds..
PCSO Connell said: “I often ride up past Kemp Delph on my way to patrol Knuzden and it was fantastic to see the community uniting and working together. “Over 20 residents gave up their free time and each one has helped to make a huge difference and clean up the area for the benefit of local wildlife and residents to enjoy.”
However, since the clean up anglers and others have once again been littering the Delph so we need volunteers to keep the area tidy. Experience elsewhere shows that only by relentlessly and regularly cleaning up grot spots do you make a difference.
A further mini clean up at the Delf took place the following year. A group of residents again turned up and the Council provided bags and plastic gloves. In less than an hour all litter was removed from the Delf.
Now the Delph is to become a climbing venue! Climbing clubs will now include the Delph on their list of faces. Be prepared to see ropes and climbers on the Delph in the summer. It will make a change from litter throwing ‘fishermen’. Hopefully it will also inspire the youngsters who traditionally use the Delph as a diving pool to try out a genuinely challenging hobby.
